In this guide

Seamless gutters are formed on site from a coil, so the only joints are at corners and downspout outlets. That is why they leak less than sectional gutters from a home center. This guide covers what installers charge for each material and what to check on the quote.

Aluminum vs. steel vs. copper

Aluminum

The default for good reason. It does not rust, comes in dozens of baked-on colors and is light enough that hangers hold for decades. Use .032 gauge, not .027, in snow country.

Steel

Stronger than aluminum and better under ladder abuse and ice, but it rusts once the coating is scratched. Common on commercial buildings and in hail-prone regions.

Copper

A lifetime material that develops a green patina. It is chosen for looks on historic and high-end homes. Expect to pay three to four times the aluminum price.

How to read a seamless gutter quote

A good quote lists the linear feet of gutter, the number and size of downspouts, the gauge and color of the material, hanger spacing, and whether removal and fascia repair are included. If it is a single lump sum, ask for the breakdown before you compare it with another bid.

Frequently asked questions

Are seamless gutters worth the extra cost?

Yes for most homes. Sectional gutters cost about $3 to $6 per foot in materials but leak at every joint within a few years. Seamless gutters cost more up front and last two to three times longer.

How long does installation take?

A crew of two installs seamless gutters on a typical two-story home in one day. Fascia repair adds a day.

Do I need 6-inch gutters?

If your roof is steep, large or has long runs draining to one downspout, 6-inch gutters carry about 40 percent more water for roughly 30 percent more cost.
